LIFE IN A SHELL (2022)
Life in a Shell explores the meaning of life and human existence, using the peacock’s symbolism and cultural references to address themes of beauty, decay, vanity, and the human connection to nature.
At first glance, the installation’s bright colors and luxurious materials suggest superficiality. However, a closer look reveals human skulls in the shells and burned wood, symbols of decay. The skulls in the shells highlight the transient nature of life, while the burned wood emphasizes destruction.
Herck’s work reflects the idea that life is filled with pride, and death, in particular, represents the ultimate futility—something central to Christian teachings. The contrast between beauty and decay serves as a reminder of the impermanence of all things. Through Life in a Shell, Herck invites reflection on the fleeting nature of life and the human obsession with appearance, power, and wealth.
