Once We Ruled the World
These paintings are part of "Once We Ruled the World," an ongoing series that first debuted at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Through bold compositions and layered symbolism, the works explore the fleeting nature of dominance—whether that of dinosaurs, who once ruled the Earth, or Homo sapiens, who now stand at the precipice of their own evolution in the digital age.
In these paintings, nature, technology, and time converge in a striking visual dialogue. Narcissus flowers emerge as symbols of human vanity, reminding us of our obsession with self-image and power. Ferns, remnants of prehistoric landscapes, serve as a bridge between past and present, evoking the resilience of nature and the inevitability of change.
Embedded within the compositions are X-ray images of the artist’s own skull, applied using silkscreen techniques—an interplay of ancient mortality and contemporary technology, questioning identity and impermanence. The works’ surfaces, though vibrant with acrylic, spray paint, and ink, bear subtle cracks, a quiet testament to time’s relentless passage and the fragility of all empires, including our own.
By juxtaposing prehistoric echoes with digital imprints, these paintings challenge us to consider our place in the vast timeline of existence. Are we the rulers of the world, or merely another species on the brink of extinction?
